Between the first day of surveying for the railway in 1870 and the closing of the passenger route and train station in 1969, the railway provided a range and number of jobs to people of the region. Many generations of Sutton residents' jobs were directly or indirectly related to the railway.

The manual labour such as cutting down trees and working on the construction of the railway buildings allowed residents to immediately help with setting up operations.

Others, such as Mr. R.N. Westover provided the railway the wood used to build the track and the firewood need for the steam engines. This document is a contract between Mr. R.N. Westover and the South Eastern Railway Company. It stipulates that Mr. Westover will provide the company with 1000 cords of wood at $0.85 for each hardwood cord and $0.55 for every other type of wood. All of the wood would be delivered to the company's warehouse within 6 months of signing the contract.

Regular train service required for tasks ranging from track maintenance and operations to customer service. Every day the railwaymen made sure that nothing obstructed the track and that telegraph wires were in place. They insured that all posts were in place and that all fence gates edging the fields were properly shut. This is a picture of Sutton railwaymen taken around 1950: Aimé Paul, Armand Saint-Amour and François Bonneville.
