The building at 255 West Avenue N. has been an important location over the years for Hamilton's Black community. It is the site of the former West Avenue Public School which closed in 1993 and which was attended by many African Canadians in the area. It now houses several self-help groups, such as Welfare Action, a non-profit organization that helps people on welfare, disability and in the Ontario Works program to resolve problems with the system.
