Marystown Co-operative Enterprise (Con Fitzpatrick)

Marystown Co-operative Enterprises Ltd., established in 1939 on "The Beach" in Marystown. Due to the outbreak of World War II, they stopped building fishing trawlers here and built four magnetic minesweepers. The Jude, the Marticot, the Merasheen, and the Oderin - named for islands in Placentia Bay. These were the first warships to be built in Newfoundland.

This shipyard was destroyed by fire in 1941.

The Commission of Government established the first government shipyard in 1938 at the site known as "The Beach". Four ships were constructed, named after the islands in Placentia Bay - the Merasheen, Jude, Marticot, and Oderin. When World War II broke out they were quickly made ready for service and sent to England to serve as minesweepers. These gallant little ships were the first and only war ships built in Newfoundland. This shipyard was destroyed by fire in 1941.
