In 1959, the Government of Newfoundland established a wood shipbuilding centre at Brake's Beach, which was known locally as "The Beach." This yard is said to have produced 50 longliners between 1959 and 1966. Longliners are motor-powered decked vessels ranging from 35 to 65 feet in length.
