Chimney Coulee served as a Hudson's Bay Company trading post, a Metis settlement and a North West Mounted Police post. The site was named for the chimneys that were left behind as a reminder of the habitation of the site. In 1969 Chimney Coulee was officially designated as a provincial site. As recently as 1994, a public archaeoloegy project under the direction of John Brandon and SENTAR Consultants Ltd. has continued excavations of this important site.
