Using photographic images from the late 19th and early 20th centuries that are stored at the Scarborough Archives, photographer George Dunbar set out to record the changes that have occurred to the Bendale community. After seeking out the exact location of each archival photo, he captured the transformation of the landscape in each picture. Some changes are far more striking than others, but the most significant ones reveal the area's evolution as the city centre of Scarborough.

In 1834 the Scarborough Subscription Library was established in the home of David Thomson. In 1878 it became incorporated as Mechanics Institute. The old church manse was moved to a small lot across the road from the Sexton's house. Here the library flourished until 1896 when a new brick structure was erected adjacent to the church.
