My son Mike was visiting from his home in Fort McMurray. My husband Len went to work. Mike had lunch in town and returned to say there were fires near Camper close to our farm. We got our two dogs in the car and tried to drive to the highway. The smoke was too thick. All of a sudden I just prayed and said, "Lord, please give me some direction here". We could only head east to the hydro lines and further to the gravel pit. I said to Mike, "Let's go the hydro lines." Mike and I and the two dogs went to the hydro lines and just sat in the car and watched the fire, it burnt all around us. Fireballs would shoot from one spruce tree to another. Finally, around seven in the evening, hydro men came and said that we could go home. Our house was there but that was all. Len came home around five. He was worried. He was looking for us. Everything around the tractor except the house was a black mess. We had no water, no hydro no phone, no nothing! Then I came driving into the yard with Mike and the dogs.
18 houses were burnt in the area but ours was spared. I believe because I have faith that God was looking after Mike and me that day because the very next day the wind blew the fire back. The wind switched and burned right down the hydro lines.
