The first ambulance arrived in Sundre in 1981 after much debate. Before that time, emergencies in Sundre were attended to by Olds and/or Didsbury. However, once the call volume and population rose, the need for a unit of our own was established.
After one call in particular, in which it took Olds over 90 minutes to respond, the debate had the push of residents behind it. Funds had to be raised for a new unit, so a committee was formed and Georgina Hilts was put in charge of fundraising starting early 1981.

The first EMT was hired in February, 1982, along with 4 volunteer drivers and 3 other attendants (EMT'S or RN's). In the first year of operation, they had 180 calls. By 1985, a new unit was needed, so a Dodge Lowtop was purchased. The 1981 Chev Van was sold to the Fire Department for use as a crew carrier, where it is still in use today. The new Dodge Van was used until 1994, when a Ford Modular Unit was purchased to go with a new building. In 1998, a second volunteer crew manned a rental unit, as the population was continuing to grow. Sundre employed paramedics for the first time in 2001, now manning 1 unit ALS and 1 BLS full time. Sundre now has 2 units, with a call volume of approximately 700.

The area in which these 2 units cover is quite extensive. It is stretches as far west as the Banff National Park Border, and occasionally beyond and as far east as Secondary Highway #766 and sometimes for mutual aid assistance for Olds. The border stretches just beyond Highway #587 in the north and beyond for mutual aid for Caroline Ambulance. The border in the south includes areas west of Highway #22, down to Water Valley and south to the Mountain View County line. In many of the emergencies that Sundre EMS attend, several of the local Fire Departments may also respond. These include Sundre, Caroline, Cremona, Olds and Didsbury, as well as the local RCMP members. All these services work together in conjunction with the local hospitals and STARS Air Ambulance to ensure every person in need gets the quick and professional help that they require.
