In the days of horse and manpower, there was plenty of work for everyone. The only idle people were the handicapped, the young and the very old... When time and energy saving machines such as coal cutting machines in the mines, excavators for digging trenches, tractors for tilling and harvesting, bulldozers for skidding logs and making roads came into common use, a new way of life evolved. We had Saturday and Sunday off to relax and families spent more time together driving a distance from home for picnics or to visit friends in neighbouring towns

"The wagon roads of early days were little more than trails, being boggy in spring and dusty in summer. Much of the heavy hauling was done in winter with sleights, and since snow precipitation was heavier years ago, the winter travel was good. The roads that had to be used by the early residents would not be classed as roads today!"

"The road down to the Kettle Valley was usually a quagmire in spring, but was negotiable with horse drawn vehicles. The road crews employed by the government for road maintenance were few in number, and to supplement the work force when needed, local ranchers were allowed to work out their taxes, especially in the spring for turning run-off water from the roads."
