This storyline details the history of tug boating in Port Moody. The main tug boat company was the Baird Tugs .
Bill Baird was a satin smith by trade who came to Port Moody from Sarnia, Ontario, in 1911. He worked at the Ioco refinery as a pipeman during its construction in 1913/1915. In 1920 he bought, 'Lloyd's Towing.' The Baird tug boats worked mainly with the Flavelle Cedar Mill, towing logs for the company and even breaking ice in the inlet in the cold winters of the1940's. The Baird family tug boats were called, 'The Best,' 'Our Best,' 'Myn Best,' 'Duz Best,' and later the, 'Service IX.' The Baird family lived in a houseboat at the end of the Queen Street wharf, which came included with the purchase of, 'Lloyd's Towing,' They later, circa 1926, moved into town on St. John's Street in the house that Perry Rowe had built in 1910.
