Why was the Kinsol Trestle saved?

The Kinsol Trestle evokes nostalgia for a bygone era - and provides a connection to our past. One can only imagine the herculean task of men building this bridge in the middle of the wilderness, the majesty of a steam train chugging across the top and the vibrant communities that once populated the forest along this railway line. The trestle is also a poignant reminder of the significant loss of the once powerful forest industry on Vancouver Island.

The size and magnificence of the Kinsol Trestle has drawn people from around the world for decades. On the first visit, you know instantly that it will not be your last. In its pre-rehabilitated state, the trestle appeared vulnerable and abandoned. Visitors have an almost visceral reaction - many feel compelled to protect it somehow.

The people with the power and knowledge to move the rehabilitation of the trestle forward deserve much credit. However, the collective will of all the people who believed in the value of the trestle cannot be underestimated. The Kinsol Trestle was, and is, important to the people of the Cowichan Valley for its historical, industrial, recreational and aesthetic values.
With the rehabilitation of the trestle, visitors now and in the future, will continue to experience the material evidence of our industrial history.

On July 30, 2010, the Cowichan Valley Citizen reported, "Work begins on historic trestle. The action is picking up at the Kinsol Trestle worksite this month, now that the long-awaited rehabilitation work of the historic structure is finally underway...."
