The Regina Rams started their football club in 1954, when they were part of the Man-Sask Junior Football League. After their run in the Man-Sask Junior Football League, the Rams decided to go to the Canadian Junior Football League in 1976, and finally in 1999 the Rams decided to go to the Canada West Football Conference, which they are still a part of.

As noted before the Rams started playing under that name in 1954, but before the Rams came into existence, the Rams were two clubs. Before they became the Rams, they were the Regina Bombers who won their only championship in 1950 in the Saskatchewan Junior Football League, and before they were the Bombers, they were the Regina Dales, who won two Western Canada junior championships in 1937 and 1939, and won a Canadian Junior National Championship in 1938.

Prior to the 1954 season, the Bombers and the Dales decided to merge the two football clubs in to one and thus the Rams were born. As stated earlier, the Rams started playing football in the Man-Sask Junior Football League. In their first season the rams went 0-7 and missed the playoffs. For the rest of the 1950s, the Rams went 22-17 with their best season in 1955 when they went 7-1. With that 7-1 record they went to the league championship but ultimately lost to the Winnipeg Rods.

The 1960s was a good one for the Rams and their best season in this decade was in 1966 when the Rams went 5-3 and finished first in the Manitoba-Saskatchewan Junior Football League, Regina won Western Canadian Championship when they defeated the Edmonton Wildcats who were the winners of the Alberta Junior League by the score of 17-14. With that win over Edmonton, Regina went on to play the NDG Maple Leafs from Montreal for the Canadian Bowl (the Canadian Bowl is the championship for the Canadian Junior Football League), and at the end of the game, Regina went on to win their first Canadian Bowl championship.

During their time within the Canadian Junior Football League, the Rams would go on to win 14 more Canadian Bowl championship, with their last one during the 1998 season.

After that season, the Rams decided to play in the CIAU and joined the University of Regina in 1999. In their first season in the Canada West Conference, the University of Regina went a woeful 0-8 record, but that did not matter for the Rams and their faithful fans, as they were rewarded in the 21st century, with their first two collegiate championships in 2000. Regina's first collegiate championship was won they won their first Hardy Cup for being the best team in Western Canada that season. With winning the Hardy Cup that season, Regina went to play in their first ever Atlantic Bowl where they faced the Saint Mary Huskies in Halifax. In a close game, Regina went on to win the game, by the score of 40-36 and went to their first Vanier Cup where they played the Ottawa Gee Gees. In this national championship game, Regina played Ottawa very tough but still ended up losing the game to Ottawa as they were defeated by the score 42-39.
