Academic program of the Regional Home Economics Schools

The first Regional Home Economics Schools were established especially in the regions of Quebec closely tied in with colonisation, consequently with a strong rural and agricultural orientation. The two year academic program offered to French Canadian girls was in strong correlation with this geographic reality. Part of the teaching was devoted to horti-culture, to poultry-farming, to gardening and even to bee-keeping, small additions to agriculture. In addition, the school schedule allowed time for all the feminine activities susceptible to giving full autonomy to the family, from culinary art and sewing , including decorative art, care of household linen, weaving, spinning to house-keeping. Knowledge regarding religion, french lessons and national history complete the program.
