The theorectic and practical academic program in the Instituts Familiaux

The diversification of the program started by Mgr Albert Tessier in the 1940's ended around 1949-1950. The rural heritage of the Regional Home Economics Schools was practically eliminated from the academic program, the Instituts Familiaux being situated principally in urban areas. In addition, we were passing progressively from a program based on the practice of the art of housekeeping to a program aimed at assuring the education of a homemaker of exceptional qualification, that is, an exemplary wife and a perfect mother at home. This woman, according to Mgr Tessier, must possess knowledge in other areas besides housekeeping, sewing and cooking. For this reason, the program included also Science and general courses such as History, English, family Pedagogy, family Bookkeeping, Chemistry, Physics, Nutrition or First Aid.
