The Boarding School

In the region, the young girls who are destined for the Instituts Familiaux are obliged to be boarders, even if they live in proximity to the establishment. In the course of the first two years, outings are rare. In the third and fourth years, the rules allow outings every weekend. The young girls leave on Saturday or on Sunday after mass and return to school on Sunday evening no later than 19h00. Many entertainments are offered to the young girls to occupy them after class hours. Mandatory periods of study before and after supper are strictly reserved for lessons and homework. During these periods, the students cannot talk to one another or read any books other than those prescribed by the program.

The family teams

Upon arrival at l'Institut Familial, the students are regrouped in « family teams ». Each team is made up of a fourth year student who plays the role of « mother » toward her companions. She must, among other things, reassure the newcomers, assure respect of the established rules in the Institut and help, when needed, the members of the family during the school year. She is assisted in her task by a « big sister » or a « father », that is, a third year student. The social life of the Institut rests on this small family unit. For example, small parties are organized by the family to celebrate the birthdays of the students; or again when a student is in the infirmary, she receives the visit of her family members. The family team is another way of preparing the young girl for family life.
