The international influence of the Instituts Familiaux

The renown of the Instituts Familiaux was felt far beyond the frontiers of the province, several foreign observers having written articles on the subject. For example, it is from France, more precisely in Paris-Match of February 18, 1950 that we find the following expression « Écoles de bonheur », to designate the Instituts Familiaux. An American journalist also states in 1950, that the formation given by the Instituts Familiaux is directly responsible for the low rate of divorce found in Québec. These schools, he says, teach the secret of a long and happy marriage. Evidently, not all the observers are as generous with their appreciation of the Instituts Familiaux. From indifference to total rejection of the academic model, the opinions of the « Écoles de bonheur », in the 1950's and the beginning of the 1960's, remain divided.

The publicity of the Instituts Familiaux also draws visitors, and especially visitors from the four corners of the globe. Also, certain women religious missionaries introduce parts of family education to foreign communities.

The careers of the Instituts Familiaux graduates, in the 1950's.

The main purpose of the Instituts Familiaux was to form outstanding housekeepers. They were primarily to educate the young woman in her role as wife and mother, technically as well as theoretically. At first, this limited orientation offered few career opportunities to the students. In fact, besides the home, the graduates of the Instituts Familiaux went principally toward the religious vocations, the career of nursing or teaching of Home Economics.
