The Mulgrave Hotel circa 1900 at the corner of Union and Duke Streets. Began operations in 1849

In the 1850s just a few modest hotels were available in Chester. The Mulgrave Hotel catered mostly to travelers from Nova Scotia but it was likely the first Chester hotel to become a stopping place for American summer visitors.

The Lovett House hotel was larger and relatively more luxurious. Through word of mouth and a reputation for good food, it quickly established itself as the most desirable place to stay. Built circa 1824

Edward Robinson Jr., owner of the Columbia House hotel, saw potential for even more summer business. He began promoting Chester as a resort community by advertising his hotel in several important American newspapers. His advertising boasted of "Pure Air. Pure Water. Inspiring Scenery. Best of Milk and Cream. No Mosquitoes. No Hay Fever."
