In 1945 or 1946 the prominent photographer Malak Karsh spent a week in Appleton taking photos of the Collie Woollen Mill and life in Appleton. Karsh stayed with the Hutchinson family and as a thank you he produced a small photo album for them with a selection of his pictures.

These amazing photographs record life at the Mill in stunning beauty. The photograph album was treasured by the Hutchinson family and a copy of the album was later given to two local Appleton residents who recently donated it to the North Lanark Regional Museum. This is a selection of the Karsh photographs.

Malak Karsh was an Armenian-Canadian photographer. He was born in the Ottoman Empire and emigrated to Canada in 1937. Malak is brother to Yousuf Karsh who was also a famous photographer known for his portrait photographs.

The woollen mill could be a dangerous place. A single carding machine was massive, having a central roller five feet in diameter with ten smaller rollers with one foot diameters placed around it. It was factory policy that no jewellery, loose clothing or long hair was worn around the machinery.
