Christmas Concert

The Christmas concert was a big event in rural schools. Practicing started in November. The teacher was responsible for organizing the concert and all the costumes. Parents were often called upon to make the costumes. Usually a concert consisted of recitations, skits, plays, a pageant, singing and of course a visit from Santa Claus.

For the drill the costumes were often made from crepe paper. Flowers could be made from crepe paper too.

A stage would be constructed at the front of the classroom and wires strung across to hang the curtains on. The curtains were usually white bed sheets.

Families in the surrounding area arrived in sleighs to take in the big production. The parents and the students were all very excited. The teacher by this time was probably a nervous wreck and just wanted the whole production to be over and done with.
