Seeding by hand made for a long day, but until one could afford a horse that was the only way to do it. The heavy horse was a welcomed addition to the farm, but needed to be fed and sheltered in the harsh winter months. Teams of horses were valuable and treated with great care and the family dog was still a child's best friend a century ago.
