Cape Breton's North Highlands: An Enduring Community
North Highlands Community Museum

   Visitors to this Community
Memories Exhibit will enjoy a
glimpse of life as it used to
be on Nova Scotia’s Cabot
Trail in the picturesque Cape
Breton Highlands.
   The exhibit evolved from
the North Highlands Community
Museum’s outreach project
with sixth grade students at

North Highlands Elementary
School. Working with the
museum’s archivist, students
collected stories from their
grandparents on life in this
area then and now.
   Jacob Wilkie’s
fascinating interview with
his grandmother, Effie was
chosen for this collection.

Effie recounts her life as
the daughter of a lighthouse
keeper on remote St. Paul’s
Island where she lived until
the age of 12.

   Acknowledgements:
   We are very grateful to
Jacob and Iris Wilkie as well
as all of the students in the
2006 grade 6 class at North
Highlands Elementary.
