   Originally the ancient
Roman celebration "Floralia,"
May Day became a custom when
the province of British
Columbia was colonized, but
the occasion was honoured
with unusual enthusiasm in
Port Moody from 1930 to 1972.

   The citizenry of Port

Moody organized lavish
parades, elected its very own
May Day royalty and ever-
observed the celebration’s
pomp and ceremony. May Queens
became local youth
ambassadors, representing
their communities at other
May Day Parades. The May Pole
dance was performed first in

the school grounds and then
by the sea in Rocky Point
Park. Awards for best
decorated bicycle and best
float were distributed.
Thanks to local service
groups, such as the Kinsmen,
Kiwanis and Just Us Girls,
the May Day Parade was
executed without a hitch for

forty years.
   These parades were so
colourful that they became a
popular subject for many
local photographers. The
pride these shutterbugs took
in their club floats or their
children and neighbours has
left a legacy in film. The
Port Moody Station Museum has
