The Loss of the SS Florizel

Admiralty House Communications Museum 2020

On February 23, 1918, the SS Florizel left St. John’s for what would become its final journey. During the routine trip, the vessel crashed into the rocks near Cappahayden, Newfoundland. Of the 137 souls on board, only 44 survived. This exhibit tells the story of this tragedy through oral histories, archival records, and artifacts from individuals connected to the shipwreck, whether they were on the SS Florizel or part of the rescue efforts.
