Sherbrooke’s Urban Sprawl From a Historical Perspective

- Bristol board or transparencies
- Non-permanent markers or pens
- Computer lab with Internet access
- Pencil crayons

Activity 1: Prior knowledge
About 30 minutes

• Hand out large pieces of Bristol board or transparencies divided in four sections on which the sentences below are already written:

1. What is urban sprawl?
2. How does it happen?
3. Has Sherbrooke experienced urban sprawl?
4. What was around Sherbrooke in the 17th century?

Divide the students into groups of four and ask them to spontaneously write their answers in the blocks on the sheets provided and to do so as quickly as possible.
Suggestion: Have each student write in a first block for two minutes. After this time has lapsed, have students change places (around their sheets) to write in another block or turn the sheet around. They have another two minutes to write their thoughts; this continues until each student has written in each block. Then they can discuss the questions and answers to bring out new elements.
• Gather the students together and compare answers.
Activity 2: Make a sketch of Sherbrooke’s urban sprawl
75 minutes
• Have the students consult the Web sites listed in the appendix to see the limits of the City of Sherbrooke in three eras (1900, 1950, 2000).
• Ask the students to use pencil crayons to make a map.

Activity 3: Assess the situation and identify urban sprawl problem
75 minutes
• Have the students examine their sketch of the City of Sherbrooke and assess the city’s problems and challenges.
• Have the students suggest solutions that could be carried out in their sector.

Suggestions for additional activities
1. Meet with municipal councillors or write a letter to city council to make them aware of the impact of Sherbrooke’s urban sprawl on plants and wildlife, and suggest solutions.
2. Propose land use in certain city parks to city council. The students could choose a park near their homes and propose a detailed plan of the potential land use. This activity can also be part of Math or Science.
3. Outing to a marsh (Marais St-François or Marais de la Rivière aux Cerises in Magog) to observe solutions put in place to help this region’s wildlife.
4. Create shelters on school grounds to enable animals and birds to move in.
