Introduction to Microorganisms and Human Health
In this lesson, your students will examine how microorganisms affect human health. First, a quick interactive multimedia file is provided to give an overview of where microorganisms are found in and on the human body. This is followed by examples of common human diseases caused by microorganisms and a suggested activity for the lesson.

This lesson should cover roughly 1 class period and should be supported by any additional class references (textbooks, teacher notes, etc...). It is best suited for Grade 11/12 or Secondary 5/CEGEP Biology, but it may also be incorporated into classes on Human Health and Food Nutrition.

*NOTE: this is Part 2 of a series of suggested Lesson Plans (parts 1 - 4) under the same general title.

Enjoy!

Suggested Activity
This list is a good example of common infections which humans have faced across many societies and time periods. At this point in your lesson, you may provide the opportunity to allow for further research and investigation into the historical and social implications of these diseases. Have students present their findings in a creative and stimulating medium. For example, they can create time lines describing the history of the disease, collages of how the disease continues to affect humans today, or even short skits enacting important events. Depending on the course, the above resources can easily be accommodated into a variety of activities to suit your specific learning goals.

Here's an idea! Check out www.bitstripsforschools.com for great software that allows you and your students to create comic strips online. It is available in both French and English, and it is free for Ontario teachers!

NOTE: please note that you can find more examples and information on the subject by clicking on the 'Learning Object Collection" link provided with each file.

Learning Objectives

Students will
- examine how microorganisms interact with other living organisms
- understand how human health is affected by microorganisms
- analyze different methods to protect oneself from potentially harmful effects of microorganisms
- explore some of the ways in which Canadians have contributed to the field of Science
