Learning Object Collection: Keeping Art Smart in the Classroom
Learning Object: Landscape Painting
Part 1 - Critical Analysis
Canada has a strong history of landscape painting. The Group of Seven was a group of artists who came together with commitment to capture the character of the Canadian Landscape. They agreed to explore Canada's rugged wilderness and evolved a distinct expressive style. Their paintings have come to symbolize the beauty and diversity of our country.

As Canadians we have an important connection to the landscapes tin which we live. I want you to consider your relationship with the landscape and how you might express that in your art and understand the tradition of landscape painting that exists in Canada.

In this part of this project I want you to study the four paintings I have included which are from 4 distinct regions of Canada. Copy the questions into your project page and answer the following questions.
Part 1- Questions
1. Name the four paintings and the four provinces that the paintings were created in and the dates when they were painted.

2. View each complete media file to have a better look at each of the paintings. And read through the Learning object that relates to the painting to gain more information and insight.

3. What does 'Shoreline' by Emily Carr epitomize?

4. When did Lawren Harris visit the Rockies? How does he describe how this inspired him to paint?

5. How does Alex Colville use perspective in this painting?

6. Where did Maurice Cullen study art ? Describe how he rendered the Quebec countryside.

7. Which of the four paintings do you like the most? Explain why.

8. Compare and contrast the painting you have chosen with one of the four. Explain similarities and differences.
Part 2 - Research
Find another Canadian landscape painter that inspires you. Conduct your research online.

1. When you have located an artist write a short biography of 200-250 words in your project page. Include your web references.

2. In the class wiki , copy and paste the url of the website you have found and the url of an example of their work and put you name and a brief statement of why you find their work interesting and inspiring.

3. Create a Blog. Post a brief statement about the artist you have chosen, who they are and why you chose their work to explore. If you can include quotes from the artist that give us and insight into their art and thoughts. Upon completion of your painting write a reflective paragraph about your painting.

Part 3 - Create
1- Plan and create your own landscape painting that celebrates a local landscape that is significant to you. Complete in the 'style' of the artist that you have been inspired by and studied.

2. Upon completion write into your Blog a reflective statement that explains your process, why you chose the landscape you did and how you feel about the painting you created.

3. Write a plan into your project for how you might continue this into a self-directed series of paintings.

Learning Objectives

1. To look closely at and respond to four canadian landscape painters.
2. To compare and contrast their distinct styles and how each represents and captures the regions of Canada in which they were created.
3. To locate and research a contemporary Canadian landscape painter that you find inspirational.
4. To plan and create a landscape painting of a local landscape using the style of the artist that you have researched.
