History is full of interesting facts and details.  As this web site affirms, the exploration and settlement of British Columbia’s rugged coast is a classic example of European expansionism into well-established First Nations communities.  The material presented in Beyond the Map is valuable and essential for serious students of all ages.  However, history must never be devoid of the human element and while we can objectively match learning goals with factual information, the following short stories add a personal dimension that will help students identify with the time and place of early British Columbia history.  The characters in the Companions series help to illustrate the beauty of the BC coast juxtaposed against the challenges of competing nations and unfamiliar cultures.  These stories will enrich your students’ learning.
