It might surprise you to hear this, but the train made it possible to settle the Prairies. Once the railway was built, the Canadian government encouraged new immigrants to come and work the land.

Did you know that Winnipeg can be compared to a crossroads?
Wheat and livestock from the West headed for the eastern part of the country went through Winnipeg. Towards the end of the 19th century, immigrants headed west also went through Winnipeg, as did manufactured goods.
