Video of CG cartographer Chris Brackeley discussing whether cartography is an art or a science

Part one of a selection of video interviews with Chris Brackley, CG Cartographer.

I think of cartography as more of a craft; a craft to me is something that requires two important elements: both a technical prowess, a technical skill that you have to bring to something as well as an artistic touch, an artistic flourish to the work. And a map really does well when it has the building blocks that are necessary – all the right lines, all the right shapes, all the right symbols. On top of that you’ve added colour and form and artistic definition to the piece that makes it clear, that makes it understandable. Anyone can technically put all these pieces together but you really need an artistry to make it speak.
