After a few unofficial junior tournaments, the former Czechoslovakia hosted the first World Junior Championships in December of 1977. In a tournament showcasing the best young hockey talent the world has to offer, Canada has shone the brightest. The Canadian Juniors have won sixteen medals in the tournament’s short history, ten of them gold. Incredibly, Team Canada won an unprecedented five straight gold medals between 1993 and 1997. In the era of the tournament, virtually all of the great players produced by Canada, from Wayne Gretzky to Mario Lemieux to Vincent Lecavalier have worn the red and white at the World Junior Championships.
