Development of industries helped push the expansion of hydroelectric facilities. The need for electricity drove the growth of the early power companies and as electricity became available the capacities of the companies grew as well as spawning new industries and growth. With the improvements to long distance high voltage transmission lines, the relatively local development of hydroelectric generation transformed from a local industry feeding other local industries to an international industry that now services many faraway locations.
