  • Copies of the Cyclone Figure and 2 satellite images from Mount Logan website
Lesson Process

1. Review the water cycle quickly at the beginning of class. Review jet streams.

2. Students go online and read the “Modern Weather Conditions on Mount Logan” subsection of the Climate Change section.

3. View the diagrams on the website, focusing on the Cyclone Figure and the two figures of satellite images. Discuss the influence of the jet stream on the movement of air/water over the St. Elias Mountains.

4. Students have the rest of the block (and probably the next class as well) to create two illustrations, similar to but expanded from the ones from the website. They will imagine a dust particle, and track its progress from Asia to North America, identifying its route, and showing where it ends up. To do so, they will use the drawing of the stalled cyclone as an example, combined with the information from the website and the satellite images. They should show and label the jet stream on their diagram. For the second diagram, they will create a fully labelled diagram of the water cycle, using the north Pacific Ocean and the St. Elias Mountain area for the diagram. They may use the profile shown in the Cyclone Figure as an example, but must complete their illustration of the water cycle.
