Mama uses a mill to grind her flour. She makes a lot of different foods with flour such as bread, cake, and bricelets which are thin crispy waffles... it's a Swiss specialty I adore.

In the kitchen, we have a meat grinder. Mama uses it when she makes tourtière, a sort of meat pie made with ground beef and pork. It's a recipe from Quebec. Mama has a friend from Quebec and she's the one who gave it to her.

When we moved here, my father had to dig a well for our water. A water pump was installed directly in the kitchen to make things easier for my mother. She doesn't have to go outside to get water like so many farmwives around still do. Our house is well-equipped and my father is proud of that.

As it's starting to get cold outside, my father lights the stove with wood. He goes in the forest behind the house and cuts logs. The whole family gathers around the stove in the evening, before going to bed, and our parents tell us stories about their native countries. My father is Swiss and my mother is French.

Hunting

Yesterday, my father went hunting with my uncles and my older brother. Papa says hunting is a sport, but it is mainly a necessity. He has two shotguns that he uses for killing game and wild rabbits. My brother, he does a lot of trapping. I sometimes go with him. He traps weasel, mink and sometimes badger.

"We would all help each other out. We'd go to someone's home and then someone else's. Sundays, after church, all of the neighbours would meet somewhere. We'd go hunting a bit in the afternoon and afterwards, we would all have coffee together."
Albert Augert
