Marian Barclay writes: "In the summer my Mom used to drive us in a little old antique car, and in the winter we went in a caboose. The caboose was a covered up little sleigh with a stove. They were quite comfortable and warm. You plodded along and you never got there very fast. It was a little better than walking. We played ball, and we went to different schools in an old wagon. We were full of horsehair and dirt when you got there, and you were worse when you go home."

As roads improved and motor vehicles came into the pictures, country schools were closed and children were transported by bus to town schools. Larger farms and smaller families also played a part in the closure of the country school.

In the present era it is not uncommon to see young people driving cars to school even though there are school buses that could transport them to their school.
