At the same time, Laing was in many ways ahead of public opinion in his views on industrial pollution and the destruction of the wilderness. Laing seems very much to have believed in the importance of a conservation (if a managed one) of natural areas. He also wrote a heartfelt polemic against oil pollution, upon witnessing the results of a spill on the Georgia Strait in 1929.
