Eggs might be preserved at this time as one had fewer chickens (who were not prolific layers due to shortening daylight hours) to winter over. Eggs could be preserved in their shells by placing them in crockery and covered with 'waterglass' and water. Instruction was given on the can. A one pound tin cost 15 cents.
