The Tilleys and their children, large and small, soon relocated to Ottawa, taking up residence in this fine brick house. The older children attended schools in the capital and the Tilleys soon found themselves part of a busy yet pleasant round of social calls, receptions and dinners. Alice soon proved herself an asset to her husband's career cultivating the correct contacts both in the capital and at home in Saint John. She also began to exercise the independence of spirit that would become her trademark by involving herself in various social causes relating to health and education.
