In 1905 a Unitarian Church was built on the corner of second avenue and centre street. It was later moved half a block,to make way for a restaurant and it still stands today as a designated heritage building. Over the years, several other churches of different denominations have been constructed in Gimli, reflecting the diverse religious backgrounds of its residents.

The first annual Icelandic Festival held in Gimli was in August 1932. The festival has been a major cultural event in the community since that time. Many former residents return home to Gimli each year and thousands of visitors come from all over the world to attend this huge cultural event. What began as a small community gathering now attracts over 50,000 visitors annually over the three day celebration.

Sports and recreation were very much a part of Gimli's social development particularly recreational skating, hockey and curling in the winter. The first skating rink in Gimli, was an outdoor rink built in 1920. In December 1948, the Gimli Memorial Recreation Centre opened with an indoor ice surface of 80 x 100 feet. This facility was renovated and enlarged in 1970.
