It is still possible to travel up the Pacific coast by boat. Ferry traffic continues year round and cruise traffic creates memorable voyages for thousands every summer.

The trail that the 36 hiked to the gold fields largely mirrors the current route of the highway from Haines Junction, Yukon to Haines, Alaska. What took the 36 over a month to travel can be easily driven in four hours.
