By 1975, 20 years after the completion of the Canso Causeway and Canal, the Strait of Canso communities were dealing with issues that come with rapid development. Life would go on with the usual ups and downs.
"If there is one thing the communities bordering on the Strait of Canso have learned, it is that the good times and the bad times are shared by all. The lives of the communities of Port Hawkesbury, Port Hastings and Mulgrave are far too intertwined for one to be insulated from the fortuity or misfortune of another. When the definitive history of the Strait of Canso is written, the construction of the Canso Causeway will be highlighted as a watershed for all communities. The "Road to the Isles", linking mainland Nova Scotia to Cape Breton propelled most of the area into a new era of growth and made the communities of the Strait of Canso into survivors".(Trade Talk 1990 by Julia Jewers)
