By late 1943, severe shortages of the paper required to make containers for high explosives, dehydrated food and medicines were reported. East Yorkers participated in drives to donate newspapers, cardboard, wrapping paper as well as damaged magazines and books.

Trash and metal drives also provided recycled materials to assist with the war effort. These drives were held in Toronto, Swansea, North York, Forest Hill, Leaside, East York and Etobicoke.
