In 1928, East York Council appointed the first paid firemen and on October 22, four former volunteers began their careers as professional firefighters.

Fire alarms were phoned in to the Township Office on Sammon Avenue. A 24-hour service was provided with a switchboard operator answering calls by day, and a watchman responding at night.

The Sammon Street garage was replaced in 1954 with a modern fire hall on Woodbine Avenue.

By 1960, East York boasted that it had the lowest per capita fire loss for Canadian municipalities with a population over 10,000.
