Until 1940, power was purchased from the Ontario Hydro Electric Power Commission through the Toronto system.The local Commission then built five substations and took delivery of power directly from the Leaside substation.

In East York, as in other communities, the Hydro substations were built to resemble the homes in the neighbourhood so that they would not distract from the appearance of the street.

By the mid-1950s, the East York Hydro Commission was the tenth largest Municipal Hydro Commission in Ontario.
