Deep trenches, several feet wide are all that remain of the early mines in the area. In 1991 portions of Caribou Road, in Bruce Mines, were closed due to the road having been built over original, and dangerously deteriorating mine works. Mine hazards in the area are now fenced off to protect the public from dangerous cave-ins and fissures of up to 550 feet deep.
