Jewish Youth Tours

With the former Jewish Synagogue housing the community's only museum and the rich Jewish history in the "Pier", the museum has also become a popular destination for organized tours.

The Whitney Pier Museum is now an important part of the Jewish Heritage Tours organized for cruise ship passengers and Jewish Youth Groups visiting the area.

From the Pier, Dear!

Another major project has been "From the Pier, Dear! Images of a Multicultural Community". This extensive history of Whitney Pier was researched and edited by Professor Elizabeth Beaton and Professor Mary Keating. Both women are faculty members with the University College of Cape Breton.

"From the Pier, Dear!" was first published by the Whitney Pier Historical Society in 1993 and due to demand it was reprinted again in 2001.

Places of Learning

Dr. Seana Kozer and the Cape Breton Literacy Network partnered with the Whitney Pier Historical Museum for "Places of Learning: Situating Literacy in Museums in Nova Scotia". Funded by a SSHRC grant from the federal government, Seana designed and coordinated "Places of Learning" as her postdoctoral program. The objective was to help adult learners develop research and communication skills while celebrating their communities. The Level 1 class at the Cape Breton Literacy Network participated in the project.

For a more detailed look at the program see the source of this excerpt, the Cape Breton Literacy Network website.
