The Jeunesse étudiante catholique (Catholic student youth) is a movement founded just recently. This active Catholic movement targets young people grades 8 to 12. They have meetings and talk about the Gospel of Christ.15

The Jeunesse agricole catholique (Catholic youth in agriculture) is also a religious organization. It is directed at all young women who have left school. It requires "the total commitment from the militant young woman answering the call of the Holy Father to spread the kingdom of Christ under Mary's protection". That's what's written [translated from original French] on the member card that belongs to my eldest sister who is very proud of belonging to that group.17

It is ploughing time. We must prepare the land for the next seeding. This year, the harvest was good but not very abundant. The price for a bushel of wheat has radically gone down, forcing us to be thriftier.19

For some years now, my parents have been buying the bare essentials because a very bad economic crisis has struck the whole area. My father bought some sheep so that my mother might make our clothes from the wool. My parents also make soap and glue because they say these items are too expensive to buy. I feel bad because they work so hard and earn so little. We hope this crisis will end soon.21

We are now in October. The weather is rapidly getting colder and we feel as if the first snow will be here soon. My mother is canning for the long winter months. She used a chopper to cut the rutabagas and the beets.23

My mother spends a lot of time in the kitchen. She makes us fantastic meals. I also really like the jam she makes from the wild fruit we find around Notre Dame. We call them saskatoons, pembinas or blueberries...even their names are beautiful. She also planted a huge garden this year so she cans vegetables and fruit to prepare for a winter that is always so long and so cold here.25
