Newfoundland joined Confederation on March 31, 1949. News and information about this new province was of intense interest to the rest of Canada. Tinning spent two months, from early July to early September of 1949, painting primarily in locations on the east coast of Newfoundland.

Some summers he travelled to other locations; paintings from Maine, the Rockies, and the Prairies. These images are included in this virtual exhibition.
