WINTER:
In early winter butchering took place to have meat during the season. The cold temperature was a good way to preserve the meat but more often there were other methods. The homemaker was involved with the end product that is - the canning of chickens, beef and/or pork, smoking bacon, sausage stuffing, etc.

Collecting Snow

Bringing in snow for a water source could be a preoccupation. The snow could be stored in a barrel - in or near the kitchen or perhaps a snow filled boiler was on stove for it to melt.

Coal Hod/ Scuttle

Keeping the stove/furnace fueled for necessary warmth. This was a never ending job and everyone in the family participated - stoking the furnace and/or stove, fetching coal that could be stored in the cellar.

Knitting

With fewer outside activities a homemaker had time to knit warm winter clothing items. There was a need for socks for the whole family, toques, mittens, sweaters, and scarves. The sewing machine was put to good use when winter clothing were needed - jackets and coats for the children.

Quilts making could take place at this time in the popular style of patch work. One might have a few neighbours in to help, which was a great time for socializing.
