In 1893 Sir Samuel Leonard Tilley retired from official political life to enjoy his remaining years in the company of his wife, Lady Alice, and his extensive family. All of his children were now grown with families of their own. Friends and enemies alike honoured his decades of service and respected him personally.

By the 1890s both Thomas and Susan Tilley had died. In 1880 the house at Gagetown was sold and converted into use as a hotel, first by the Simpsons and then the Dingees. Over time a veranda and upstairs dormer windows were added to the front of the house. But Tilley would have easily recognized the bustling business as the home of his youth.

As they had all of their lives, the Tilleys lived elegantly at their homes in Saint John, St. Andrews and more recently at a summer home in nearby Rothesay. This green vase from the 1890s was purchased at an auction of the contents of the Germain Street house in the 1920s.

In their retirement, the Tilleys entertained quietly and kept a large library. The following two books are inscribed by the Tilleys.

Lady Tilley's parlour at the house at St. Andrews illustrates the prevailing style for clutter in the 19th century. Walls are lined with momentos and objects from a lifetime of collecting.
