Mennonites have been singing hymns in harmonies for many years.

Tony Wiebe and his son Ray Wiebe have both sung in Mennonite Brethern Quartettes for many years. Tony came to Canada from Russia in 1925 and sang with a number of different men over the years, including Bill Thiessen, Henry Voth, Jake Voth, John Regier, George Penner and Jake Klippenstein. The first Mennonite Brethern Church he attended was in the Greenfarm area just south of Herbert and he later sang in the Herbert Mennonite Brethern Church.

Tony describes large inter-church Mass Choirs that took place in the 1940's and 1950's. A conductor would come into the community, lead the choir, give voice lessons and produce a large program at the end of his stay.

The Old Rugged Cross
1993
Herbert, Saskatchewan, Canada

11

The familiar traditional hymn by George Bennard is sung here by Don Mathies, a fourth generation farmer in Herbert community.

"On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
The emblem of suffering and shame;
And I love that old cross where the dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners was slain.

So I'll cherish the old rugged cross
Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it someday for a crown."
